Sony MAY have been trying to hold up the Activision deal by leveraging Bethesda games. MS said "you're the market leader, we wont benefit if we give you everything, current stuff we share, future stuff ours" (not in those words). This might have been the exchange which set Sony off.
MS was interested in a bunch of companies: AT 32:42 some of them are interesting, I can't be bothered to list them all. Included Returnal developer, which may have been why Sony got to them first.

The line of questioning he was given makes that abundantly clear and, he's correct. Folks like Activision and, Take Two reject the idea of releasing day one on subscription services.
