Actually, any of us who have felt/do feel the Holy Spirit would argue that, in fact, we do know that the Lord does exist. As for "I was told by a pastor that it dangerous to ask so many questions and to be so skeptical," that person was/is an asshat. Being skeptical is natural for those who rely on faith. Hence it being called faith.
My advice: If you are ever in great need, just ask Jesus for help. I was not a believer, then I was rescued. Now, I'm a believer. (I prefer "knower," but that can seem elitist when out of context.) May He rescue you as He has rescued countless others.
Here's the problem; I've been married twice. Both women were devout Christians and so naturally I gave it another shot with both of them. Both relationships totaling 10 years were the worst times of my life. You'd think I would have learned my lesson with the first but I didn't. The second wife did nothing but drag me down and tell me that God was more important than being successful and affluent, etc. Those were my poorest, unhappiest and angriest years of my life. "Just keep putting God before yourself"..."Keep praying"...."We're going to be alright".....Bullshit. I left her ass. I got away from her and starting putting my trust in myself. Relying on myself. Believing in myself. You know what? Around 1 year later, I have an awesome job with great pay, I own a house, I have an awesome, gorgeous and highly intelligent girlfriend and I'm actually fucking happy for the first time in my life.
There are no such things as miracles, karma, or luck. There's just you, your abilities and the world around you.
Hmm seems like your second wife has a total different look on life than you, you want success and affluence, she was devoted to God, why the hell did you marry her?
Makes you wonder if the reason why they are sad sacks because they don't know how to appreciate so little.
Many people aren't appreciative when things come easy for them. When my wife and I visited some of her poorer relatives in the Philippines, there was no air-conditioning. The toilets don't have running water. To flush it, you first got a bucket of water outside. No hot water either for baths. And yes. You hauled in the water you'll use for the bath. Their only amenities is a radio and an old CRT TV with over the air broadcasts. But, they always have food on the table. Not quite a first-world lifestyle. But, they're happy. They're very hospitable. They have a lot of social life outdoors. They made our stay very satisfying. I look forward to visiting them again next year.
Thats good that you didn't let the lack of amenities and basic plumbing spoil your experience. Nice one.
@GazaAli: It won't happen (fortunately). The President in the end, is elected by the electoral voters, not by majority population votes. Electoral voters are more informed and more "rational" than the uneducated mass.
I'm not very knowledgeable about the workings of the American voting system, but electoral vote may prove to be in favor of Trump more than popular vote is. Say whatever you want about the American citizenry, but there's no way Trump can win popular vote, which means the electoral vote may prove favorable to him no matter how unfavorable his chances might be. Another thing is that the electoral voting system seems more prone to manipulation and "rigging", which is probably why the U.S refuses to adopt a popular voting system.
If you can't win the popular vote then you have no chance to win the Electoral College.
